In a bid to spread awareness against liquor consumption, Biharis will attempt to create the world record of human chains, starting January 21, 2017. According to a report in Hindi Daily Prabhat Khabar, Biharis will form approximately 7264-km long human chain. The aim of the campaign would be to form at least 150-km long human chain in each district, resulting in at least 5700-km long human chains.

A decision in this regard was taken on Monday during a meeting headed by chief secretary of the state Anjani Kumar Singh. During the meeting, the officials picked four main roads in the state for creating the world record of the longest human chain. At present, the world record is with Bangladesh, according to Prabhat Khabar.

As per the plan, everyone living within the 4-km radius of the main road and within the 2-km radius of a by-pass road would participate in the awareness campaign. The human chains would connect almost all corners of the state.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is trying a number of ways to ensure that prohibition in the state remains successful forever. This innovative drive will not only send a strong message against liquor consumption in Bihar but also across the country.

The prohibition policy has positively affected the lives of millions of poor and middle-class residents of the state. According to government estimates, about 12 million parents of schoolchildren in the state have pledged not to consume alcohol since the official imposition of complete prohibition in the state on April 5, 2016.

Prabhat Khabar had reported on November 22 that 1.19 crore (11.9 million) parents of schoolchildren have pledged not to consume alcohol since April 5, 2016.

The state government will start a new awareness campaign against liquor consumption from January 21, 2017.

The prohibition in Bihar has also strengthened Kumar’s credentials as a “clean” politician, especially after he joined hands with Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Party and the Congress for the Assembly elections in the state last year. Yadav is infamous for being involved in several scams. He has also been convicted and sent to jail several times.
