SINGAPORE, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) The Singapore Management University (SMU) introduced bond-free full sports scholarship in honour of Paralympics gold medallist Yip Pin Xiu on Tuesday.

From August 2017, the Yip Pin Xiu scholarship will offer a full waiver of tuition fees to outstanding student athletes admitted to any SMU undergraduate program next year.

SMU said up to two students who have excelled in sports will be awarded the scholarship every year. The scholarship serves as a "growth opportunities allowance" for students to participate in various personal development programs offered by the university, such as seminars and exchange programs.

SMU Provost Lily Kong said in a statement that the scholarship was named after Yip to recognize her personal journey as a leader and role model.

"Pin Xiu has shown exemplary results in her sport of swimming despite the odds. She is not only an ambassador for sports, but a role-model and inspiration to all Singaporeans," said Kong.

Yip, the 24-year-old athlete said, "SMU has given me the opportunity to train and compete at the highest level while still studying at the same time." She hopes that the scholarship will give others the chance and motivation to pursue sporting excellence.

Yip, the para-swimmer who suffers from muscular dystrophy, earned Singapore two gold medals at the Paralympics in Rio earlier this year. Enditem
