DMK Supremo M Karunanidhi, currently in hospital for a drug-induced allergy, offered his heartfelt condolences over the death of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, who passed away at 11.30 pm on Monday. “I offer deep condolences on the passing away of Jayalalithaa, wishes of lakhs of her followers will make her immortal,” he said. His son and DMK leader M K Stalin also joined politicians from across the country in paying tributes to Jayalalithaa. “Deeply saddened by the demise of our CM Selvi Jayalalithaa. My deepest condolences to the party cadres & well wishers in this hour of grief,” Stalin tweeted.

Earlier, within a month of Jayalalithaa being admitted to Apollo Hospitals, former chief minister Karunanidhi demanded photographic evidence of her meeting with the Cabinet ministers and Governor Vidyasagar Rao. His comments drew widespread condemnation from AIADMK leaders. The DMK and AIADMK have been bitter rivals since the time of AIADMK founder MGR, who left DMK to form his own party. Karunanidhi was dislodged by MGR as his party swept to power during Emergency. Karunanidhi, however, went on to serve thrice as chief minister after the legendary actor’s death.
