Cong, NCP walk out amid noisy scenes over demonetisation

Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, however, undermined the Opposition outcry and walkouts as he said, “The demonetisation is a move that would make every Indian proud. Every Indian will now be able to boast of a 56-inch chest.”

Legislative Council Chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar asked the government to lead a delegation to voice the slowing rural economy following the RBI decision to ban deposit of old notes in DCCBs.

Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde questioned the government’s demonestisation policy and its adverse impact on the common people. Vikhe-Patil said, “We are not against the policy reforms. But what is the logic of disallowing people to deposit old notes in DCCBs.”

BJP’s Mumbai District Cooperative Bank Chairman Praveen Darekar will lead a delegation to Assembly Speaker Haribhau Bagde Tuesday to express concerns over the matter.

NCP leader Ajit Pawar slammed the government for taking the policy decision without making adequate preparations. Citing an example, he said, “Now, we hear that militants killed across the borders were also in possession of the new currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination. What purpose has this government served by mindless currency change in haste.”

Pawar added, “People are standing in queues at midnight so that they can withdraw money to cope with daily expenditure.”
