Khaleesi, Eleven, And, Uh, Margot Robbie Lead IMDb’s Most-Searched Stars Of 2016

Since its launch in 1990, the Internet Movie Databate (IMDb) has witnessed the many ebbs and flows of the entertainment industry — picking Mad Max: Fury Road as one of 2015’s best films (awards wins notwithstanding), disallowing the publication of actors’ ages per California state law, and the rise of Suicide Squad‘s Margot Robbie. Yes, that’s right. The 26-year-old Australian actress who made Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jordan Belfort cower in The Wolf of Wall Street was named one of the website’s most-searched performers of 2016.

“Wait a minute,” you’re probably thinking. “Wolf of Wall Street came out in 2013. Maybe Suicide Squad came out this year, but… but… How is everyone else only just catching up with Robbie’s existence now!?” As Variety explains it, Robbie was named “IMDb’s top breakout star” in 2014 following her breakout performance alongside DiCaprio, so it’s not like one of the Internet’s earliest monoliths only just discovered her after she stripped down to almost nothing and bashed a few bad guys’ brains in in Suicide Squad.

Along with Robbie, who nabbed the annual IMDb list’s top spot, Game of Thrones‘ very own Khaleesi (Emilia Clarke) and Stranger Things‘ non-Barb, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) took spots two and three respectively. Brown also earned the distinction of being the site’s top breakout star for 2016:

  1. Margot Robbie
  2. Emilia Clarke
  3. Millie Bobby Brown
  4. Tom Hardy
  5. Morena Baccarin
  6. Gal Gadot
  7. Alicia Vikander
  8. Daisy Ridley
  9. Haley Bennett
  10. Leonardo DiCaprio

Variety notes that the list is often “female-heavy,” though The Revenant chums DiCaprio and Tom Hardy garnered a couple of respectable spots. Yet again, Robbie defeated her Wolf of Wall Street collaborator — though what’s even more interesting is Brown’s winning 2016’s breakout star honor. Why? Because she edged past Spider-Man (Tom Holland), a now-fully conscious robot armed with a pistol (Evan Rachel Wood), and Darth Vader’s whiny grandson (Adam Driver) for the win.
