US Market Indexes Start the Week Higher

U.S. market indexes gained on Monday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching a new high.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19,216.24 for a gain of 45.82 points or 0.24%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,204.71 for a gain of 12.76 points or 0.58%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5,308.89 for a gain of 53.24 points or 1.01%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 12.37 for a loss of 1.75 points or 12.39%.


Monday's market movers

Leading economic reports affecting market trading for the day included the following:

  • PMI Services Index reported at 54.6 following a previous report of 54.8.

  • ISM Non-Manufacturing Index at 57.2. Above consensus of 55.5 and an increase from the previous report of 54.8.

  • The Labor Market Conditions Index, a composite of 19 components, reported an increase to 1.5.



In the Dow Jones Industrial the following stocks led gains:

  • Nike (NKE) 2.73%.

  • Goldman Sachs (GS) 2.42%.

  • Visa (NYSE:V) 2.09%.

  • JPMorgan (JPM) 2.02%.

  • Microsoft (MSFT) 1.60%.



The financial, consumer discretionary and technology sectors led valuations higher for the broad market. In technology, the S&P 500 technology sector gained 0.92% on Monday.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,336.36 for a gain of 22.10 points or 1.68%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 824.44 for a gain of 15.09 points or 1.86%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7,935.44 for a gain of 124.63 points or 1.60%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,490.46 for a gain of 138.14 points or 1.48%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,643.42 for a gain of 18.63 points or 1.15%; the S&P 100 Index at 971.13 for a gain of 4.85 points or 0.50%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,312.80 for a gain of 9.22 points or 0.71%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,224.06 for a gain of 7.52 points or 0.62%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 627.16 for a gain of 4.48 points or 0.72%.
