Delhi Jal Board to construct two ponds to recharge Dwarka groundwater

THE DELHI Jal Board will construct two ponds in Dwarka to recharge groundwater and increase its supply by 10-15 million gallons daily, said Water Minister Kapil Mishra Monday.

The two ponds, measuring 35 acres, will be constructed in the Dwarka Water Treatment Plant and the Pappan Kalan Sewage Treatment Plant. The ponds will get treated water from the latter. Mishra said this will be the first experiment of its kind in the capital and will be carried out in consultation with the National Environment Engineering Research Institute.

Mishra also said the number of new water connections jumped in the past year-and-a-half, indicating that more people were now being serviced by the water utility. “We have the highest number ever of water connections — 19.54 lakh — which is an increase from the 18.6 lakh connections in 2014-15,” Mishra said.

According to DJB officials, an average increase of 60,000 connections is per year has been observed for the last few years.
