Chaos reigned supreme at Vashi toll naka on the Sion-Panvel highway after toll collection resumed on Monday morning, as toll booth operators were unable to give back change.
The situation went from bad to worse after a truck, loaded with vegetables, broke down on the Vashi creek bridge. It took a while for the vehicles to move freely, as traffic officials were unable to move it off the road.
“We could not pull the truck using cranes, as it was loaded with vegetables. So we had to wait until it was repaired,” said an official from Vashi traffic unit.
While the traffic snarl on the Navi Mumbai side crossed Vashi, it reached Mankhurd on the Mumbai side of the toll naka.
Inspector Rajesh Babshetty from Vashi traffic unit said, “We asked the toll naka officials to leave vehicles without collecting tolls on two lanes on either side of the road. Toll collecting was resumed on all lanes once the office-goers passed the naka. The situation attained normalcy around 10.30 am.”
