Goods train rail engine catches fire on Mumbai-Ahmedabad route near Surat

Surat: Rail traffic on Mumbai-Ahmedabad main line was disrupted today owing to a fire in the engine of a goods train between Kim and Kosamba stations of Surat district of Gujarat carrying various containers to Khodiyar station near Ahmedabad.

The engine of the goods train Conra-Khodiyar coming towards Khodiyar from Surat side suddenly caught fire this morning while the train was about to cross a bridge between Kim and Kosabma station, Station Manager of Kosamba Subodh Kumar said.

The driver and co-driver of the goods train came out of the engine and somehow informed the incident to railway officials. It was reported to us at around 820 am this morning. There was no casualty in the incident and the reason behind fire was a matter of investigation, he said.

The fire was extinguished by the fire tenders who reached the spot after getting the information. It has affected only the engine and none of the wagons, Kumar said.

The rail traffic on the down line of Mumbai-Ahmedabad main rail section was disrupted owing to the incident. Over a dozen trains including Ahmedadbad-Mumbai double decker, Navjivan express, Hazrat Nizamuddin – Mumbai Garib Rath express, Gwalior-Pune Express and Udaipur-Bandra express were halted at various stations. Efforts were on to move the goods train and restore the traffic on the line.

Another engine has been sent to the spot to move the goods train, Mr Kumar said.
