Morning prayers rang out from the ivory domes and minarets of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, just a six-lane motorway across from the Armed Forces Officers Club where, in room 2274, a loudly-snoring man was lucky to be still breathing.

Almost dawn in Abu Dhabi then on the morning of Formula One's World Championship decider and roughly 12 hours away from Lewis Hamilton setting off on a 56-lap cruise to victory, as if propped up on silken pillows in his Mercedes.
