KANPUR: A groom and his family in Mahoba district were allegedly held captive by the bride's family for having gifted "old and outdated" jewellery to the bride.
The groom's family said that due to the ongoing currency crisis, they could not withdraw enough money from the bank to purchase gifts, including ornaments.
A source in the village said, "When the bride's family ignored their pleas and refused to solemnise the marriage, the groom's family lost their patience and threatened to lodge an FIR.
Following this, the girl's family locked the groom and his family members in a room and held them captive for several hours."
"It was embarrassing for us too for not giving new jewellery to the bride on the wedding. As a last recourse, my mother gave her ornaments for the 'charhawa' ceremony," said Khem Chandra, the groom.
The police later intervened to negotiate with the groom's family, who promised to replace the old jewellery with new ones soon. The marriage was thereafter solemnised in the presence of the police. Station officer of Panwadi, A Chauhan said, "A police team pacified the agitated members of the girl's family and the villagers. The marriage was solemnised after much effort."
