Several alumni from IIM Ahmedabad on Saturday mooted the idea of having the top three IIMs collaborate to come up with a common research journal at the concluding day of the third edition of Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) alumni meet held at IIMA campus.
At a panel discussion on ‘Voices of recent Alumni: Enhancing Value of Fellow Programme in Management’, IIMA FPM alumni and former IIM Calcutta Director Shekhar Chaudhari said, “I think we have reached a point where at least the top three institutes IIMA, B & C think about making these journals Vikalpa (IIMA), Decision (IIMC) and IIMB Management Review (IMR) come up to Level B — today it is not even Level C. I think the FPM programme and students can have a role in this.
Today there are much more resources and the orientation of the (FPM) programme has changed, the faculty members and students have also have changed — so then why can we not think about making one of the top journals in the country. That can happen if students along with their professors publish their term papers at least in these and that’s a good thing for you for getting jobs in academic institutions and you will get experience and it will lift up the quality of your research.”
Another FPM alumni said, “Can it not be that all 3-4 IIMs come together under one title and the editorialship is rotated over the year to other IIMs. I think all the four can be merged into one and the editorial should pass from one IIM to another and these four can take lead and we can have a world class journal.”
Current FPM Chairperson and IIMA faculty Amit Garg said that FPM students and alumni can play a larger role in the B-school journal becoming a world-class one. He said, “The idea of having a common editorial board is very good and packing it with some really renowned people — maybe from FPM alumni by bringing some of them in. I would think that efforts can be made for having a higher level of editorial board and let us see if this happens.”
