AHMEDABAD: A walkathon and cyclothon to raise awareness on breast cancer was organized on Sunday at Samved Hospital.
Breast cancer surgeon, Dr Shefali Desai, said that the aim of the event is to create awareness regarding growing incidence of breast cancer in women.
“One in 20 women in India are detected with breast cancer. Alarmingly, the disease is catching them young as roughly 50% of women detected with cancer are in their 30s and 40s,” said Dr Desai.
Doctors are now recommending women to conduct breast self-examination in their 20s and annual clinical examination by doctors in 30s, Desai said adding that cancer may not be prevented, but it definitely can be cured if detected early.

Beast cancer survivors were also felicitated at the event by Uday Kotak of Kotak Mahindra Bank. Survivors urged women to undergo regular check-ups for early detection of breast cancer, and detailed how it was possible to beat the disease with right medical help and and determination.
