Backed by Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda and hailing from Panipat, Kundu has been president of the party’s Karnal unit. The Haryana Congress office broke into celebrations as soon as the result was declared. Amidst infighting in the state Congress, Kundu’s victory comes as a shot in the arm for the Hooda group.

Chiranjeev had been the YC chief in 2010. Captain Ajay Yadav was then minister in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government. Chiranjeev will now become vice-president of the state YC. Among the women contestants, Khushboo polled 1,313 votes. She will be vice-president for the reserved woman’s seat. Another candidate Manju polled 1,162 votes and Neelam 337.

Crying foul, Yadav said leaders in the entire Ahir belt used money and muscle power to defeat him. “We fought a fair election and gave tough competition. While only pictures of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi can be put on the banners, the candidates had displayed pictures of B S Hooda and his son Deepender Hooda. Party rules do not allow that,” he said.
