CHIEF MINISTER Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said the Centre’s decision to ban Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes has adversely affected the BJP, as its ‘parivartan yatras’ across poll-bound Uttar Pradesh are failing to draw crowds because people are busy spending time in queues.

Speaking at a gathering in Lucknow after laying the foundation stone of a museum in Hussainabad area in Lucknow Old City, Akhilesh said: “BJP is in a fix. Is paise wale maamle mein ho sakta hai BJP ke log himmat na juta payen chunav ke liye kyuki paise wala maamla aisa fansa hai… (There is a possibility that the BJP people might not be able to gather courage for the polls because the demonitisation issue is stuck…)”

He added: “Samajwadi crowds are turning up in inauguration programmes because they do not have to exchange money… Their (BJP) yatras have failed… you can check it… their yatras had started from different directions in the state… check how many people are turning up in their yatras… because those who were to attend the yatras are in queues.”

Continuing his attack on the BJP, Akhilesh said the party was holding several programmes in UP but only in view of the elections. I want to know what work the BJP government at the Centre has done for Uttar Pradesh or in Lucknow in the last two-and-a-half years?”

“Samajwadi people are also against black money and corruption but BJP has left the nation in a state of confusion
and affected the economy of the country…” he added.

Festive offer

Questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea of a “cashless society”, Akhilesh said the Centre has not taken any
initiative to apprise the rural population of the concept.

“Youths are aware of the technology but how that awareness will reach people in rural areas? We want to ask where is the preparation for digital India? They say that there is no need for bank and wallets and money can be sent through mobile phones but I ask that who would teach them that?” he asked.

“We have given laptops in villages. Over one crore registration has been done so far for our smartphone scheme. You (PM) should tell what have you done? You should know that the government, which gives pain to people, does not survive,” he added.

Calling BJP leaders “chamatkari”, Akhilesh and: “They wanted to reach out to the people through the issue of
patriotism. Now, they want to reach out to them through issues such as black money and corruption.”

Alleging that Opposition parties in UP do not want him to inaugurate any project, he said: “When we inaugurated the (Lucknow-Agra) expressway, they said that it is incomplete. When we inaugurated (Lucknow) Metro, they said it was incomplete. Now, somebody may say the same

thing about the work done around the Imambara. But we Samajwadis are aware that no inauguration can be done once model code of conduct for elections is imposed.” He, however, added that Assembly elections in the state were still three months away or could even be delayed by four months.

Describing BSP a “patthar wali party”, Akhilesh said: “They party could not give anything to the masses…”
“There is no comparison of Samajwadi Party (with any other party) — neither in work nor in leadership,” he claimed.
