Former France head coach Bernard Laporte is the new French Rugby Federation president.

Laporte won 84 per cent of the General Assembly votes and defeating outgoing President Pierre Camou and Alain Doucet and is hoping to bring the amateur and professional game together.

After guiding France to the World Cup semi-final in 2003 and 2007, he served as sports secretary for the following two years.

He returned to coaching with Toulon in 2011 where he won three consecutive European Cups between 2013-15 and added a Bouclier de Brennus trophy in 2014.

Camou had been running for a third term, but Laporte's election would indicate change was looked for.

Quoted in Le Parisien, Laporte said he felt a real dissatisfaction among the amateur game in France and he hopes to address it. The Stade de France is another big issue as Laporte looks to entice the French public to a team that last won a 6 Nations Grand Slam in 2010 and received the wooden spoon in 2013.

The 52-year old, who won't be paid for in the position stated that he would dedicate one day a week to work with clubs and will dedicate three days a week to his work as President.
