Traffic woes at Maddilapalem

U-Turn at Andhra University out-gate creates regular traffic jams.

Visakhapatnam: Despite the various options to ensure hassle-free traffic movement at Maddilapalem Junction in Vizag city, traffic chaos continued at the junction. The motorists have complained that some of the decisions of the traffic cops have been leading to more problems than easing them. The cops are also rethinking to remove the road-dividers near the Andhra University’s Engineering College gate to ease the traffic.

The Maddilapalem Junction has emerged as the busiest junction besides traffic congestion point as it is the one of the entrances for Andhra University and also connects NH-16 stretch with city roads. Many vehicles have been passing the junction to reach various destinations. With the vehicles from both Satyam Junction and Isukathota on NH-16 taking turn at the junction to enter Andhra University and RTC Complex Road, traffic chaos is a common sight at the area.

The traffic cops have put up a diversion with road-dividers near the AU Engineering College gate to ease the traffic. With the diversion, vehicles which were coming from AU Engineering College take a U-turn from the Swarnabharathi Stadium to go to Maddilapalem. Taking a U-turn near the stadium is not an easy task as one has to cross the busy BRTS Road and there is no traffic police on the spot to regulate the traffic, said Aditya Kumar N, a student of Andhra University.

The diversion at the Andhra University Engineering College gate near Maddilapalem has been creating more problems to commuters as some motorists are violating the norm and coming out from the in-gate to go Maddilapalem. The traffic cops have to rethink the diversion to ease the traffic at the area, said K. Siva Kumar, an employee of Andhra University. Admitting that the Maddilapalem Junction has turned out to be one of the traffic congestion areas in the city, ADCP (Traffic) K.M. Patrudu said that they are chalking out new options to ease the traffic there.

“A flyover on the NH-16 stretch at Maddilapalem and a separate road for entry into AU are the proposed plans to ease the traffic in the area and we are also rethinking the road design works to mitigate the chaos,” he added.
