+AMERICAN ANTHEM (c, 2, Bodemeister–Indy's Windy, by A.P. Indy), a $180,000 KEESEP yearling turned $435,000 OBS March buy after breezing in :10.1, was backed accordingly as the 9-5 favorite off a bullet-filled worktab for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, including a five-furlong move in :59 1/5 (1/61) at Santa Anita Nov. 23. The bay chased the early leaders from his outside draw through an opening quarter in :21.96. Little Juanito (Exchange Rate) kicked for home with a lengthy advantage and appeared to be on his way to victory, but American Anthem kept on coming in the stretch to nail that one on the line by a head. He is the 12th winner for his freshman sire (by Empire Maker). The winner's dam Indy's Windy, a $1.1 million KEESEP yearling, was purchased by WinStar as a 4-year-old for $550,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November sale just a month after breaking her maiden. Racing three times for that operation before retiring to the breeding shed, the half-sister to champion Banshee Breeze (Unbridled) produced a More Than Ready colt in 2015 and a Pioneerof the Nile filly this term. She was bred back to Bellamy Road. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $31,200. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
