RAJKOT: Surendranagar police has launched a manhunt to nab the 2011-batch Indian Information Service (IIS) officer, who had escaped from police custody after he was detained on charges of attempt to murder on Tuesday night.
Navalsang Parmar, 35, who is posted in New Delhi, is a native of Sonadha village in Surendranagar's Chuda taluka. In May this year, he and four others were booked for attempt to murder after some quarrel with local residents.
Parmar had obtained a stay against his arrest from the Gujarat high court.
However, the court vacated the stay last week, paving way for his arrest.
“We have formed teams to trace Parmar who is absconding,” said Deepak Meghani, superintendent of police, Surendranagar.
He was detained after the court’s stay was vacated and a probe was initiated in connection with an FIR lodged against him in Chuda police station in May this year.
Sources said Parmar escaped from the police station at around 8pm on Tuesday while police were completing the formality for his arrest.
Since he escaped from police custody, he was booked under section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension).
According to sources, Parmar is currently posted at the All India Radio (AIR) in New Delhi.
