The Central Election Committee (CEC) of Congress led by its president Sonia Gandhi, which met in Delhi on Saturday, cleared names of 62 candidates out of a list of 63 forwarded by the screening committee for the Punjab Assembly polls scheduled early next year.
Sources said the meeting lasting two hours discussed at length the MLAs who were recommended to be dropped by the screening committee led by former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot. The committee is learnt to have told Gandhi that the seats had strictly been recommended after getting reports of thorough surveys. The party wants to field winnable candidates given the fierce triangular electoral battle.
