Protests broke out in south Kashmir’s Mundhol village and angry locals blocked the national highway over the killing of a Fisheries Department guard at Chancer village of Kulgam district. The Army and police maintain that the guard, identified as Assadullah Kumar, was killed in cross-firing between militants and soldiers after the Army launched a cordon and search operation in Chancer village during the night after receiving information about the presence of militants in the area.
Watch what else is making news:
Kumar was on night duty when the Army launched the operation and villagers alleged that he was killed deliberately.
Employees of the Fisheries Department also held protests across the Valley. Villagers blocked the highway and left only when the Deputy Commissioner and Kulgam SP assured them of a magisterial inquiry.
The Army spokesman said Kumar was killed in crossfire during a search operation.
