Police sources said Chowdhury was an upper division clerk in the land revenue department in Cooch Behar, and a resident of Adarshpally, Behala. He allegedly got down at Bandel station from Paharia Express on Saturday morning after he saw an SBI ATM near the station with very few people waiting in line. He had been trying to withdraw money for the past few days.

While standing in queue, Chowdhury suddenly collapsed and fell on the staircase. Police officials said he was lying unattended for around 20 minutes, with the people in line being more concerned about withdrawing cash.

Later, the ATM security guard noticed Chowdhury and with the help of a few others, took him to Imambara Hospital and informed the police.

The hospital declared him brought dead.

According to primary medical reports, Chowdhury died of a heart attack. Police said his family had told them that he had been worried about not being able to withdraw his salary for the past two days.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the incident as “unfortunate” and asked whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi was taking note of it.

“Unfortunate death toll continues… This morning Kallol Roy Chowdhury collapsed and died in front of SBI ATM at Bandel station. My condolences to the bereaved family. Is Modi babu listening?” she tweeted.

On Friday, two men aged 73 and 80 had collapsed and died while waiting in queue to withdraw their pensions in North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas. Following the deaths, Mamata had accused the RBI of not stocking the state’s ATMs with adequate cash.
