In the ever-changing socio-political environment in the country, there are people who are not very comfortable with the present scenario in the country. There are constant debates on freedom of expression, proving nationalism and patriotism. Recently, the Supreme Court stated that National Anthem must be played in movie halls across the country to instil “committed patriotism and nationalism”.

Probably triggered by the ruling, Facebook user Deepak Rana wrote a moving Facebook post on how different the country was just a few decades back when nationalism and patriotism wasn’t the centre of discussion while still a part of the social fabric, when supporting another country over yours wasn’t seen as anti-national and when dialogue was easier in public discourse without the fear of being lynched.

Rana’s post was shared by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in the form of a picture which has gone viral with over 7,500 shares. Rana’s original post also went viral with over 1,000 shares.

Here’s what he wrote.

I grew up in an India that was much different. I stood up for national anthem, because I found it cool, not because I had to. When I visited a temple, I questioned priests about the idea of god and they did not mind it. When I met a political party worker, I told him that his leader was stupid and he laughed. When I supported Australian cricket, because of Steve Waugh, no one objected. I was surrounded with soldiers and military officers, yet, none of them ever talked about nationalism and anti-nationalism. It’s funny, just a decade or two, and how quickly we have moved backwards.

“Feels really good when Dr Tharoor shares your post. Thanks everyone for such positive response. And even to those who criticised. That’s the whole point. I want to live in an India where we can disagree and still coexist happily. It wasn’t a political post, but a personal one. Hope you will understand,” wrote Rana.
