Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to first president of India Dr Rajendra Prasad on his 132nd birth anniversary.

Calling him an inspirational figure, Narendra Modi tweeted, "I bow to Dr Rajendra Prasad on his birth anniversary. Our nation owes a lot to him for his inspiring leadership at a crucial time."

Dr Rajendra Prasad was the president of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Constitution.

He had served as a cabinet minister in the first government of independent India under Pt Jawaharlal Nehru before the Constitution was put into force.

An ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr Rajendra Prasad played crucial role in the freedom struggle and took part in several movements of the Indian National Congress.

Rajendra Prasad was born on December 3, 1884 at Ziradei in Siwan, Bihar and was the first president of the country.

Dr Rajendra Prasad held the highest office in the country from January 26, 1950 to May 13, 1962.
