Chappell-Hadlee Trophy: Glenn Maxwell fined for ‘disrespectful’ comments

Ben HorneThe Daily Telegraph

GLENN Maxwell has been fined by Australia’s leadership group as tension simmers between the all-rounder and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.

Australian captain Steve Smith yesterday expressed his bitter disappointment at the “disrespectful” comments Maxwell made about his Victorian state captain and national teammate Wade.

Maxwell has been slapped with an undisclosed in-house fine, but however unlikely it might be that he will play tomorrow’s first one-dayer against New Zealand at the SCG, he is available for selection.

Smith revealed that Maxwell is “shattered” at how this latest episode has played out after sitting down and personally laying down the law to the drama-plagued 28-year-old.

Maxwell and Wade have spoken, and Smith has declared the side will now move on.

“Everyone was disappointed in his comments. I’ve expressed that to him myself and spoke to the team,” said Smith.

“One of our values is respect and having respect for your teammates and your opposition, your fans, your media and I thought what he said was very disrespectful to a teammate and his Victorian captain.

“The leadership group got together and we decided to fine Glenn. We thought that was a sufficient punishment so we’ve gone down that path. I was disappointed with the comments he made.”

Smith refused to speculate on whether Maxwell would be welcomed by NSW for next season and said his focus was on turning around a five-match ODI losing streak.

Neither Maxwell or Wade were present at an optional training session yesterday that was attended only by Smith, Aaron Finch and James Faulkner.

Maxwell has taken the fallout hard after two days ago stating his disappointment that Wade bats himself higher in the Victorian batting order.

“I think he was a little bit shattered with what he said,” said Smith.

“I don’t think he thought the words came out the way they actually did. But we’ve moved on from that now we’ve obviously fined him and expressed our disappointment towards what he said and moving on and try to focus on this game tomorrow.”
