Nellore: Multiple withdrawals turn bank ATMs dry

Customers forced to use cards from multiple banks.

Nellore: One of the major reasons for the money getting exhausted from the ATMs within a few hours is because customers withdraw money using credit and debit cards of different banks available with them at one go despite murmurs from the people standing behind them in the serpentine queues. Some customers are using similar technique for withdrawing money from different counters in the same bank branch. Officers in the main branch of State Bank of India in Nellore were baffled when they found the practice recently.

Assuming that bank staff cannot detect his manoeuvre after drawing Rs 6,000 from different counters, he approached branch AGM M. Sankar Rao with a withdrawal form for Rs 4,000 when he noticed Mr Rao patiently listening to the woes of the customers and helping them. The AGM was taken aback when he found three entries of Rs 2,000 debited from the account on the same day.

When confronted, the customer defended his action claiming that he withdrew the money for medical expenses of his ailing father. “I have allowed him to collect another Rs 4,000 too since we don't know the actual situation,” Mr Sankar Rao said adding that they are trying to do their best to satisfy every customer coming to the bank. Responding to a question on multiple transactions by the customers in different counters on the same day despite cap on withdrawals, he said the staff handling hundreds of customers unlike never before is not in a position to check the previous transactions.

He said they deliver cash only to the pensioners at the rate of '4,000 each on Friday and wait for cash to address the needs of employees. SBI Personal Banking Division manager S. Balaji said they are guiding customers to use net banking by carrying out practical demonstration in the branch itself while reacting to a question on a campaign by administration to educate public on cashless transactions.
