KARACHI: Karachi’s Mayor Waseem Akhtar with the collaboration of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan, is going to start a cleanliness campaign in the city under ‘Hamara Karachi Program’, and to start repairing broken roads immediately, The campaign was launched in Shah Faisal Colony. Leader of MQM, Pakistan, Farooq Sattar also begin the campaign in Gulshan Iqbal 13-D after brushing away the road. MQM London activists also reached the scene and raised slogans in favor of their party chief in Shah Faisal Colony area, During media talk, Waseem Akhtar said that they would wipe out garbage from Karachi till the end of 2017. He urged the women of Karachi to participate in the campaign. “Despite limited official power, I would request that whatever appeals have been made by me after becoming Mayor to the Sindh and Federal Government my team has now ventured out to work launching 100-day cleanliness drive of the city within available resources”, Waseem asserted. The Mayor said during 100-day plan he would focus on the two most critical issues facing the residents, piles of garbage scattered across the metropolis and the broken roads are making day-to-day commute a hassle. Waseem said his team was working in collaboration with the union councils in three districts of Karachi to build at least one park, one school and one clinic in each union council during the next 100 days. The team will also focus on removing garbage and repairing roads in each union council, he added. Talking to media, he said with little resources and some official powers, you would witness changes. “But there’s a lot of work to do, there is a lot of backlog in the garbage collection which would require time to clean up”, he added. He requested the public to be patient, “I promise there will be improvement, definitely some improvement”, he said. The Mayor lamented hurdles the local government has been facing in its attempts to improve city’s civic condition and blamed the provincial government for failing to release funds, “The local bodies need power, authority and resources to make something happen,” this is in stark violation of Article 148 and 149 of the Constitution and appealed to the Prime Minster to allocate more budget and authority for Karachi besides appealing Karachi residents to help and support him in achieveing these goals. During cleaning drive, Waseem came in confrontation with the workers of MQM-Pakistan and MQM-London in Shah Faisal Colony. Workers from the two factions had an encounter with the Mayor of Karachi, who has vowed to priorities Karachi’s cleanup and repairing of roads in his 100-day plan for city.
