Saints' Mark Ingram 'feeling good,' Terron Armstead ruled out

METAIRIE, La. -- Mark Ingram returned to New Orleans Saints practice on a limited basis Friday and said he is “feeling good” with the toe injury that sidelined him on Wednesday and Thursday. However, he is officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s visit from the Detroit Lions.

“We’ll see,” Ingram said, stopping short of declaring himself ready to play as he did last week after recovering from a concussion. “I just had my toe, it’s just a little sore ... it was a little sore. So I’ve just been getting treatment on it during the week. I felt good today, so we’ll see.”

Ingram said this toe injury is “not nearly as bad” as the previous toe injuries he suffered in 2011 and 2013. In 2011, he needed season-ending surgery. In 2013, he missed six weeks with a big-toe issue.

“I wouldn’t have been able to practice today if it was that bad,” Ingram said. “So I went out there and practiced today and it felt good. I’ve got a couple more days to recover or heal up, so we’ll see.”

Ingram was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his six-year career Wednesday after running for 146 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and catching a 21-yard touchdown past last Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

If he can’t play, veteran Tim Hightower is the obvious candidate to take over a full load of running-back duties. The two have been splitting touches equally over the past month, and Hightower has thrived as an every-down back when needed the past two seasons.

The injury outlook is not as good for Saints left tackle Terron Armstead, who was ruled out with his lingering knee and quadriceps issues. Armstead has been in and out of the lineup this season while trying to battle through the multiple ailments. And he returned to the starting lineup in Week 12 but had to leave the game early.

Armstead’s injuries have been unfortunate since he is arguably one of the two or three best players on the team. However, second-year pro Andrus Peat has played well in Armstead’s absence this season for New Orleans, which leads the NFL in total yardage and passing yardage.

Backup running back/special-teamer Daniel Lasco was also ruled out of Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury.
