Delhi: How social media aided Pashmina thief’s arrest

Someone identified the accused and gave her address to police.

Uploading the CCTV footage of a woman shoplifting a Rs 4.5 lakh Pashmina shawl from a Khan Market store on social media helped police trace and arrest her earlier this week. Several teams of Tughlak Road police station had been looking for the woman, who appeared to tuck the shawl under her clothes before leaving the store. But police had very few leads on her identity. The breakthrough, however, came when the investigating officer uploaded the CCTV footage on social networking websites.

The complaint was made on November 27 by store director Anuja Mehra, who said the accused came to the store and asked her to show some clothes to gift someone. But she soon left the store without buying anything.

“The theft came to light after some hours when the complainant was checking her inventory and found one of the Pashmina shawls was missing. She scanned the CCTV footage and saw the woman tucking the shawl under her clothes,” a senior officer said.

“The IO conducted a raid and traced the accused to her residence in GK-I. During questioning, she told police that she was locked in a court case with her estranged husband, who was refusing to pay her maintenance,” the officer said.
