The district police yesterday launched a token system for auto-rickshaws and fixed 11 routes to streamline their plying.

Dr Ravinder, DSP (Traffic), said with the launch of token system, Rohtak had become the first town to have adopted such a mechanism to regulate the movement of auto-rickshaws in the state. Tokens have been distributed to nearly 5,000 operators.

“The auto-rickshaw operators have been granted the token of the route sought by them and from now on, they will have to follow their fixed routes,” the DSP asserted.

He saida special checking campaign would be launched to detect violations in the fixed route plan. He said the operators of auto-rickshaws plying between Rohtak town and nearby villages had been directed to get the term “Grameen Auto” prominently painted on a white strip on their vehicles. The pink auto-rickshaws, which are driven by women drivers, have been exempted from the token system, he said.
