Rewe Group Opens Central Produce Depot For Bavaria

German retailer Rewe Group has recently opened a depot in Eitting, near Munich, that will be the main distribution centre for Bavaria for fruit and vegetables.

Until now, several regional warehouses in Eitting, Eching and Buttenheim, were involved in supplying around 1,000 Rewe Group-affiliated supermarkets. The new Eitting depot will help to centralise logistics, reduce storage time of fresh produce and increase the overall efficiency of operations.

In addition, it will cover the international distribution of certain product ranges. Suppliers of regional product ranges will continue to deliver directly to regional warehouses.

Eugenio Guidoccio, managing director of Rewe Group Fruchtlogistik explained: "Fruit and vegetables are a very sensitive commodity group, contributing in a major way to our image. With the implementation of a main depot we expand and optimise our logistics for this commodity group and ensure the essential basic skills for a successful implementation of our overall strategy."

The construction of the 10,000 square-metre depot, which has 40 loading bays, took seven months. The depot will employ up to 60 people.
