LOS ANGELES, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- The 3rd annual Game Awards descended upon the Microsoft theater in Los Angeles Thursday to pay homage to the greatest video games of 2017. Hosted by the show's creator Geoff Keighley, the event was live streamed online across various channels including YouTube, Twitter, Facebook Live, Playstation Network, Xbox Live, Steam and Twitch just to name a few.

The awards show kicked off with celebrated game designer Hideo Kojima receiving the Industry Icon Award one year after he was unable to attend the Game Awards due to his unceremonious departure from publisher Konami following the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
"Last year I thought I lost everything, but I didn't lose anything thanks to all of you" Kojima said onstage of his fans who have continued to support him.
Blizzard Entertainment's online multiplayer shooter Overwatch took home the coveted Game of the Year award along with trophies for Best Game Direction, Best Multiplayer Game and Best eSports Game.
The title had faced stiff competition from the likes of Doom, Inside, Titanfall 2, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End which was the night's other big winner taking home awards for Best Narrative and Best Performance for Nolan North who portrays series main protagonist Nathan Drake.
Other notable winners included That Dragon Cancer winning the award for Games for Impact, Pokemon Go earning Best Mobile/Handheld Game and Dishonored 2 being named Best Action/Adventure Game.
The night was also highlighted by two new trailers for Nintendo's highly-anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The second clip which debuted later in the show, highlighted the title's new open-world setting that will give players freedom to tackle enemies and obstacles in unique ways.
Surprise trailers came in the form of a teaser for a future Guardians of the Galaxy episodic game by developer Telltale Games and a cinematic teaser for Kojima's next project Death Stranding that featured film director Guillermo Del Toro keeping an infant safe while making his way across a dystopian city. Doctor Strange and Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen also makes an appearance as a military leader in control of an army of skeleton soldiers.
Notably, a new trailer for Telltale's Walking Dead Season 3 also debuted featuring new playable character Javier as he unsuccessfully attempts to save his family from a zombie outbreak from within his own home. The footage also featured an older and more battle-hardened version of series main protagonist Clementine as she joins up with Javier.
