Over the past few years, politicians and Bollywood stars dominated the list of top newsmakers in India. But 2016 was different. The list saw the entry of Indian female sportstars like PV Sindhu, Sakhi malik and Dipa Karmakar, sportspersons who made the country proud at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
PV Sidhu, who won the silver medal in the women’s singles category at Olympic Games emerged as the top newmakers in the country. Alongwith her, Sakshi, Dipa and wrestler Vinesh Phogat dominated the list which was released by Yahoo.
While wrestler Sakshi emerged as the bronze medallist in Rio, Vinesh’s dream of winning a medal at Olympics crashed when she was injured during her bout against China’s Sun Yu. This ended her hopes as her knee was badly injured and was taken off the mat.
Gymnast Dipa was the other newmaker in 2016 after she finsihed fourth at the Rio Olympics, missing the bronze medal by just 0.150 points. This was the first time a gymnast from India managed to reach such a position in gymnastics.
After becoming the first Indian woman to win a silver medal at the Olympics, Sindhu continued her good form by winning the China Open for the first time in her career and became only the second Indian female badminton player after Saina Nehwal to win the title. A week later, she stormed into the Hong Kong Open final but lost in the summit clash.
Sakshi and Dipa are yet to return to action after their Olympic performances. Vinesh Phogat is yet recover from the knee injury and is expected to return to the mat only in April or May for the Asian Championships in New Delhi.
Apart from the sportswomen, the other top newsmakers in India were the regular politicians and celebrities. But still there was a surprise name of Rohit Khandelwal, the first Indian (and Asian) to win the Mr. World title.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was once again in the newsmakers list while Tamil Nadu Cheif Minister Jayalalithaa was also in the list. Also in the list was Ram Krishan Grewal, the retired Indian army personnel who committed suicide ove the OROP issue.
Former Editor-in-chief of Times Now news channel Arnab Goswami was also in the list of top newsmakers.
