Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show a hit among Chinese audiences

By Jiang Jie (People's Daily Online)    16:51, December 02, 2016

With its apparent focus on China, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has received more than 1.5 billion views on Sina Weibo, with many joking that the show is an early “Happy New Year” to China. The event was held in Paris on Nov. 30 (local time).

Even before the show officially streams online on Dec. 6, Chinese sites have already lit up with discussions of the four Chinese Angels to make it down the catwalk. Netizens have also been discussing the Chinese elements of the show, includig Elsa Hosk’s dramatic dragon costume in the opening portion of the show.

Meanwhile, close observers picked out several more Chinese elements, including Kendall Jenner’s flame tail and several models’ embroidered thigh-high boots. The boots feature a color that traditionally represented Chinese emperors.

On Sina Weibo, discussions of the fashion show have topped 1.5 billion hits, while more than 680,000 netizens have reserved access to the official online streaming event on QQ.com. Many netizens commented that they wanted to support the Chinese models. Instant messaging app WeChat was also flooded with photos and comments about the Angels and the show.

Victoria’s Secret has been edging into the Chinese market since 2015, when the first boutique store opened in Shanghai. The Shanghai store sells Victoria Secret beauty products, but not the brand's famous lingerie.

The subtle nods to China have been interpreted as ambition on the part of the brand to succeed in the Chinese market, according to VOGUE. Meanwhile, the show's popularity among Chinese audiences may indicate that the brand is doing just that.
