Tyrone Gaelic football star Cathal McCarron was involved in a tense radio interview last night, after he was questioned about an alleged sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

The All Star nominee was a guest on Off The Ball to promote his recent autobiography, Out of Control, in which he opens up on his destructive gambling addiction.

Over the course of the interview, Newstalk host Ger Gilroy asked a number of questions about an alleged sexual relationship McCarron had with a 15-year-old, who he met on Tinder, an online dating app.

A testy exchange followed.

"I can’t get behind somebody who’s involved with the incident and who deals with the aftermath of the incident in the way that you’ve done," Gilroy said.

"We were contacted by the father and asked not to speak to you. There’s been a delay in getting you on the show and people were wondering why we haven’t had you on considering the high-profile nature of the book."

The duo went back and forth on the issue, with McCarron refusing to comment, saying that he has been 'legally advised not to speak about it'.

"I have solicitors in place and they’ve advised me not to talk about the incident," he told Gilroy.

"It’s not fair for me to come out and talk about anything that’s gone on out of respect for both parties."

The exchanged continued for a number of questions as Gilroy probed McCarron on the incident.

"I don’t fully understand writing about this incident and then not wanting to speak about it," Gilroy said.

"That's just the way it is," McCarron replied.

McCarron won an All-Ireland medal as a part of the Tyrone squad in 2008, and subsequently spent time in Cuan Mhuire fighting a gambling addiction.
