Opposition could even demand that PM Modi be present in both Houses at same time: Prakash Javadekar

Javadekar’s comments come as the ruling party is under fire from the Opposition for allegedly passing the Income Tax Amendment Bill without having a discussion on the floor of the House. On Thursday, sixteen parties including the Congress placed their objections before President Pranab Mukherjee over the passing of the bill. “We (opposition delegation) gave the President a memorandum. The Bill was passed without any discussion, this is not the way to run the Parliamentary business. Voice of the opposition was stifled in Parliament,” Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had said.

The winter session of Parliament, that began on November 16, has not been able to make much headway in legislative business as the BJP and the opposition parties have sparred on the government’s decision to demonetise high-value currency notes. The opposition has demanded a statement from prime minister Narendra Modi on the issue of demonetisation and a debate followed by a vote. While the government has shown willingness to engage in the debate, so far the prime minister has not spoken in either House.
