A total of 725 cases of abuse and neglect have been reported to the Ministry of Women and Children by professionals under the Child Welfare Decree of 2010, it has been revealed.

And recent statistics by the Ministry has shown an increase in reported cases of abuse and neglect, in relation to child welfare.

The reported number of cases by Police on child abuse is even higher, from January to October.

There were 1041 reports of child abuse cases during this period.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa made the revelation while speaking to Scripture Union campers at Adi Cakobau School in Sawani.

On the topic of prevention of child abuse and neglect, Ms Vuniwaqa said investing in children today would determine how good the future of Fiji would be.

“I believe that the home and family are the most important and the most influential institution in society,” said Ms Vuniwaqa.

Ms Vuniwaqa said Government has a special attention to Fijian children and has provided many home grown opportunities so that they can reach their full potential.

“It is only right that you are aware of your rights and responsibilities that come with it, and have your say in what we as policy makers and caregivers should do for your well-being,” she said.

“Spiritual interventions such as these are therefore a very strong platform for the open discussion of such issues affecting children of your age,” she added.

Ms Vuniwaqa also talked on the important campaign of 16 days of activism against gender based violence.
