Mumbai: Two held for cheating owners, selling their cars

“The accused promised the complainant Rs 90,000 in rent a month. However, they asked for all original documents pertaining to the vehicle and to be exempted from paying rent for the first two months,” said B M Kakad, senior inspector, Matunga police station.

Salunkhe, the police said, was tempted by the high rent offered and agreed. However, in the next two months, the accused allegedly forged documents to change the vehicles’ ownership and registration and put them up for sale.

“When the complainant did not receive the rent after three months, he asked the accused for an explanation. But Davar asked for more time. In November, the complainant was shocked to learn that his vehicles had been sold without his knowledge,” Kakad said.

After Salunkhe, five others from different parts of the city lodged similar complaints against Davar and Bhadreshwar. “We have arrested the accused and recovered six vehicles from them, apart from Rs 30 lakh in cash that they received from the sale of the vehicles. We are in the process of recovering four other vehicles that belong to individuals living in Mira Road,” Kakad said.

The officer said that the idea to dupe vehicle owners originated from Davar and he was helped by Bhadreshwar, who ran a business selling second-hand cars.
