Tom Hanks Says Clint Eastwood ‘Treats His Actors Like Horses’

Tom Hanks was on the Graham Norton Show and shared what it was like to work with Clint Eastwood. Hanks, who stars in Eastwood’s latest movie, Sully, said that the Hollywood icon’s experience starring as Rowdy Yates on Rawhide influenced how he directs.

“He had all these directors there who directed movies who made a big deal about yelling ‘Action,’” explained Hanks, who then proceeded to mock-holler as though he were one of those directors from cinema’s early days. “Every time they would do that, the horses they were on would bolt,” he said. So, since actors can also be wild, emotional animals who fly off the handle easily, Eastwood treats ’em as such, it would seem.

“When you’re in a Clint Eastwood movie, you don’t know the camera’s rolling, and you hear, over your shoulder, ‘All right, go ahead,’” Hanks said, mimicking Eastwood’s quiet growl. “You just keep doing it until you hear him say, ‘That’s enough of that.’ And then you move on to the next setup. It’s intimidating as hell.”

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who along with Gemma Arterton was on Norton’s panel, couldn’t believe it. “He does that every time? ‘That’s enough of that’?” asked an incredulous Gordon-Levitt. “Instead of ‘cut’?” Hanks replied: “He’ll say ‘stop’ if he wants you to do it again, but mostly, ‘That’s enough of that.’ Hey, thanks for the vote of confidence!”
