AURANGABAD: Thousands lined up streets of Nanded to bid adieu to Lance Naik Sambhaji Kadam, who was among the seven Armymen killed in the terror attack at Nagrota on Tuesday.
Slogans of Sambhaji Kadam Amar Rahe, Amar Rahe and Bharatmata Ki Jai filled the air as the body was carried from the airport to Janapuri, the hometown of the 32-year-old solider.
It covered the distance in more than two hours after reaching the airport by 8.30pm.
The final rites of brave-heart were performed amidst full state honours in the presence of the Defence authorities, department of sainik welfare and Nanded district administration making necessary arrangements.
Earlier, a special aircraft of the Indian Air Force carrying the body reached Nagpur, from where, a chopper was arranged to take body to Nanded by 6.30pm. Eminent personalities from different walks of life paid tribute to Kadam at Nanded, where his body was kept for paying last respects.
Lance Naik Sambhaji Kadam from the 5 Maratha Light Infantry unit had joined the Army in 2002 and was to retire from service next year. The news about his death came as a shock to his family as well as the residents of Janapuri.
Sambhaji, the only son in his family, hailed from a humble background as his father works as a watchman with a private company in Pune and his mother does the odd domestic job. His wife and three-year-old daughter also live with his parents.
Sambhaji always drew a deep sense of pride for working in the Army and would tell villagers in Janapuri that there was no better job than to serve the nation by joining the armed forces.
