The last day of November 2016 brought us a new maintenance release of the popular, free, open-source, and cross-platform MKVToolNix MKV (Matroska) manipulation tool, version 9.6.0.

Dubbed "Slave To Your Mind," MKVToolNix 9.6.0 is here one and a half months after the 9.5.0 milestone, but it doesn't look like it's a major version. In fact, there are only eight changes implemented in MKVToolNix 9.6.0, and among the most important ones, there's a fix for an endless loop issue in the mkvmerge component when appending files.

"This release fixes one major bug in mkvmerge (an endless loop) when appending files. It mostly occurred when muxing MPLS playlists. Several other minor bug fixes and usability enhancements were implemented," said Moritz Bunkus in the release announcement. "Nothing’s been changed regarding the packaging since v9.5.0."

mkvmerge and mkvextract now support HDMV TextST subtitles

The multiplexer functionality in MKVToolNix GUI was enhanced as well, adding a new "source file’s directory" column to the track list, along with an option for allowing users to select all tracks of the currently selected source files in the source file context menu. Also, MKVToolNix GUI's job output tool was improved in MKVToolNix 9.6.0.

Another interesting change is the addition of support for HDMV TextST subtitles to the mkvmerge and mkvextract tools, and the VobSub functionality of mkvextract has been updated to add a "langidx" line to the .idx file during extraction. Two other minor issues were patched in mkvmerge, one of them related to the MPLS parser.

Last but not least, MKVToolNix 9.6.0, which you can download right now for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems, adds a new MKVToolNix GUI feature, an option in the Preferences dialog that lets you display only the list of frequently used languages or country codes in their respective selections.
