HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), on Wednesday attended a session on investing in the field of health as part of the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) 2016.
The session was addressed by Dr Lawrence H Summers, former US Secretary of the Treasury, who tackled the importance of investment in health and its enormous economic returns, in addition to its humanitarian as well as social roles.
Dr Summers praised Qatar's important role and valuable efforts in health investment at home and abroad despite the circumstances in the Arab region, pointing to the role of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development and the Education City as well as the country's fruitful cooperation with regional and international organisations in the field.
He stressed that all countries that want to improve the health of their people need to change old criteria in their budget spending and reallocations in the health and related sectors and spend generously on them. He gave China and Sweden as an example in pursuing this policy, emphasising its role in reducing the number of deaths and improving public health.
He stressed that poor and middle-income countries can achieve good results and improve public health as well as make progress in just one generation if they direct their investments to the sector.
