I WAS angry after reading the report on the decision to reduce the Automatic Enforcement System (AES) fine from RM300 to RM150 “Fine under AES fixed at RM150” (The Star, Nov 16). It seems that those who chose not to settle their AES fines are now being rewarded with discounts. Meanwhile, those who paid the RM300 fine on time would be seething with resentment. How is this fair? Can those who settled at RM300 be refunded 50%?
Reducing the amount of the fine will only encourage people to ignore summonses, hoping for waivers or discounts later. Habitual law breakers who have a long list of traffic summonses must not be let off easily but instead charged more.
