Nagrota attack: Soldier from Batala was to come home the day he died

In his last phone call, he had talked to his daughter and promised her to bring toys.

HAVILDAR SUKHRAJ Singh, who was killed in the terror attack at Nagrota Tuesday, was expected to reach his home in Batala town of Gurdaspur district the same evening, when news of his death reached his family.

Sukhraj Singh (32) had planned to come home on 20 days’ leave. He had informed his wife and daughter about his visit through a phone call on Monday night. His younger brother Dhanraj Singh said, “He would had left for home from Nagrota on Tuesday afternoon by bus and he should had reached home by 6 pm.”

He said, “The family had no information about the tragedy. My mother and his wife, Harmit Kaur, were trying to call him since morning but his phone was not reachable. By evening, we started calling his friends posted along with him. Initially, friends of my brother avoided giving us the bad news because they knew that Harmit has been suffering from a stomach infection. Finally, they told us.”

He said, “In his last phone call, he had talked to his daughter and promised her to bring toys. His children are still waiting for him to come with toys.”

Sukhraj Singh had two children Sargundev Singh (5) and Shubhpreet Kaur (7). Sukhraj Singh’s father was also in the army and he died a few years ago.
