Re: “I worked hard and saved for retirement; don’t call me ‘privileged,’” Nov. 20 letter to the editor.

Kudos to letter-writer Richard Borga. I was born into the lower class and was raised (sometimes) by a single mother but studied hard in high school, joined the Navy and served four years, went to college on the GI Bill while working 3/4 time, studied hard and entered graduate school and worked as an RA and a TA, then married. After earning an advanced degree, I spent 40 years working hard at my profession while saving a part of my income, as did my wife. We did not spend beyond our income and deferred many things that we could have spent our money on.

As Borga said, hard work + saving has given us a comfortable retirement. I find it ludicrous to call us privileged; we earned it, we saved it, and now we have it to enjoy.
