Deepa Malik, who won a silver medal in shot put during the recent Paralympics in Rio, was felicitated by the Sarvkhap Panchayat during a ceremony organised at Nitanand School here today.
Talking to mediaperson, Deepa said khap panchayats had played an instrumental role in encouraging sportspersons.
“I am overwhelmed by the blessings showered on me by the khap elders. It will inspire one to scale greater heights,” she said.
Deepa said disabled-friendly infrastructure could go a long way in grooming the sporting talent amongst the differently able sportspersons. She exhorted the girls to set higher goals for themselves and strive hard for their attainment. “Let me tell you, you can achieve anything with sincere efforts and dedication towards your aim,” she asserted.
The leaders and representatives of different khaps, led by the head of Malik Khap, Baljit Singh, presented a memento to Deepa. She was presented a shawl by Satya Malik, managing director, Nitanand School.
Earlier, Deepa was accorded a rousing welcome by the schoolchildren and khap representatives.
