Justice Fraser Martin, a Quebec Superior Court judge best known for presiding over the case of Concordia University professor turned killer Valery Fabrikant, has died at age 77.

Martin, who received his law degree from McGill University, served as a judge for 31 years until his retirement two years ago.

Prior to becoming a judge, Martin served in the Canadian Armed Forces and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Hudson, where he resided.

Over the course of his career, he presided over numerous high-profile trials, including those of former Quebec City radio host Robert Gillet and sponsorship scandal participant Charles Guite.

Non was more infamous than the trial of Fabrikant, who was convicted for the 1992 shooting that killed four academics and wounded a secretary at Concordia University.

Martin also chaired the Canadian Conference of Judges in 1998 and 1999.

A ceremony in Martin’s honour will be held on Thursday in a Hudson funeral home. He is survived by his wife, four children and eight grandchildren.
