'Baan Muang' daily stops printing

A Thai daily newspaper, Baan Muang, has announced it will shut down on Jan 1, ending 44 years of publication.

Nawakij Baan Muang Co, the publisher of Baan Muang daily, of which late Chart Thai Party leader Banharn Silpa-archa was once the major shareholder, announced the closure in a statement on Wednesday evening.

The statement said the emergence of new media and the current economic condition had made it difficult for print media to survive even though the management had done the best it could to battle bankruptcy for quite some time.

“We decide to stop publishing Baan Muang from Jan 1, 2017 and by necessity will end the employment of all employees,” the daily’s editor Chalor Chansooksri said in the statement.

“The management thanks all staff members, from past to present, who have gone through happy and rough times together. This is a day of making the most difficult decision.”
