PUNE: Gunfire shattered the calm in the forest near the sleepy Ambhu village early on Tuesday morning with the Pune rural police gunning down history-sheeter Shyam Dabhade (42), one of the accused in the murder of RTI activist Satish Shetty, and his associate in an alleged encounter.
Police claimed to have recovered four countrymade pistols, a revolver and 50 live cartridges from Dabhade and his associate, Dhananjay Shinde alias Tamboli (26), both residents of Talegaon-Dabhade.
The two men, who had serious cases against them, were evading arrest since long.
Ambhu, located 60km from here and westward from the industrial town of Chakan, is surrounded by hills and forests. The rural police said a team of officers, including inspector Ram Jadhav, assistant inspectors Satish Hodgar, Rajesh Ramaghare and Vinod Gholve, went to the village after receiving a tip-off that Dabhade and Shinde were hiding there.
Police sources said the team combed a 30-km area during the search operation which began around 2am. "The police spotted the duo in a tent near a hillock around 8am and asked them to surrender.
