BUCHAREST, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced on Tuesday that the country would make available an increasing number of over 3,000 servicemen, gendarmes and policemen for missions abroad in 2017.
Iohannis made the announcement after a decision in this respect at a meeting of the Supreme Council for National Defense (CSAT), the top-most executive body able to decide on security and defense issues.
According to the president, the forces made available by the national defense ministry include a number of 1,688 servicemen, with 507 more than the current year, while the Interior Affairs Ministry will volunteer a number of 1,527 gendarmes and policemen in missions sponsored by NATO, EU, UN and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
The head of state underlined that the participation in missions and operations outside Romanian territory is an important component of the country's strategic profile within the international community.
